Nighthawks Draw with Cal Poly Humboldt in Season Opener

ARCATA, Calif.  – Northwest Nazarene men's soccer began the 2022 season with a 2-2 draw at Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday.

How it Happened

NNU struck first, as in the eighth minute of the game, Jake Levine assisted Jimmy Koufidakis to put the Nighthawks up 1-0.

The Nighthawks held that lead for most of the game, but in the 71st minute, the Lumberjacks' Devin Hauenstein scored on an assist from Dylan Tovani to get back to an even 1-1 score.

Seven minutes later, the Lumberjacks took their first lead when Nico Herrrera-Land assisted Juan Perez to make the score 2-1.

The Nighthawks did not trail for long, though, as in the 85th minute Jake Levine scored off an assist from Cameron Natvig to draw back even at two.

That score held to the end of the 90 minutes.

Due an NCAA rule change, there are no longer any overtime periods for the regular season starting in 2022. Games tied after 90 minutes are a draw. Overtime and shootouts will take place to decide postseason matches.

Nighthawks Notes
  • Jimmy Koufidakis led the charge with two of the Nighthawks six shots on goal to go with his first-half tally
  • The Nighthawks had 10 shots with six of them on goal, to the Lumberjacks five shots with three of them on goal
  • NNU earns the draw in the first game of the year after not recording one all of last season
  • The Nighthawks fared much better against the Lumberjacks this year, improving on a 4-0 defeat in nonconference action in 2021
Up Next

The Nighthawks will travel down the coast to visit Cal State East Bay in Hayward, California on Saturday.
