NAMPA, Idaho – Winners of four in a row and seven of their last eight, Northwest Nazarene men's basketball will take that momentum and the No. 2 seed into the GNAC Tournament this weekend.
The Nighthawks are set to play the winner of Wednesday's 7/10 matchup between Simon Fraser and Alaska Fairbanks in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion in Seattle.
Saint Martin's earns the top seed in the tournament by just .02 points over the Nighthawks, 3.62 to 3.60. The No. 2 seed is the highest that NNU men's basketball has ever achieved, with a No. 3 seed in 2018-19 the previous best.
Alaska Anchorage is third, Montana State Billings fourth, Central Washington fifth, and Seattle Pacific sixth to round out the six that would have qualified in a normal season. However, due to an unequal number of games played by all of the teams, the number of teams has expanded to all ten and will include No. 7 Simon Fraser, No. 8 Western Washington, No. 9 Western Oregon, and No. 10 Alaska Fairbanks.
With the tournament expanded to all 10 teams, Seattle Pacific was added as a host for first round and quarterfinal games in addition to the main host Saint Martin's. If the Nighthawks are to advance, the semifinals and finals will all be played in Lacey.
The tournament figures to be very exciting, as the conference has seen a lot of parity all season with each team winning between 11 and 5 games.
NNU earned that two-seed after going 10-5 in GNAC play and 12-8 overall on the season. After a road loss to Central Washington on Feb. 3 dropped NNU to 3-4 in conference action, the Nighthawks went 7-1 during the rest of February, with the only loss coming on a buzzer-beating three-pointer on the road at regular season champion Saint Martin's. The final three games of the regular season were each won by at least 21 points, including a 33-point victory over Seattle Pacific and a 35-point rout of Montana State Billings.
All games during the men's and women's GNAC Championships will feature a live webcast via
GNAC.tv.
