Tale of Two Games as NNU and SMU Split on Friday

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene baseball split their home doubleheader with Saint Martin's on Friday, by scores that could not have been more different as NNU won game one 16-5 before falling to SMU 1-0 in game two.

Game One

The first game belonged to the Nighthawks' offense, as NNU piled up 16 runs on 19 hits. NNU scored two in the first, three in the second, and three more in the fourth to lead 8-0 before SMU got on the board.

NNU's lead was cut to 10-5 after the top of the eighth, but the Nighthawks brought home six runs in the bottom of the inning to go back up by 11.

Seven Nighthawks had multiple hits, including a 4-4 effort from Duke Pahukoa. Tyler Best added three hits, while Parker Price, Haden Keller, Grant Kerry, Quentin Ayers, and Alex Salsman each had two. Best and Kerry each homered, with Kerry's coming as a three-run shot.

Kyle Ethridge got the win on the mound, going 7.1 innings and allowing four runs on eight hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. Nick Irwin got the final two outs of the eighth, and Colton Makinster came in to toss a scoreless ninth.

Game Two

Game two was nearly the opposite, as only one run was scored and it didn't even come via a hit, as Saint Martin's tallied a run in the second inning on a wild pitch.

NNU was shut out by SMU, managing just three hits in the seven innings.

Brock Moffitt started and went 4.1 innings, striking out eight while allowing just the one run and four hits.

Pahukoa had two of the Nighthawks' three hits, bringing his total for the day to six.

Next Up

The Nighthawks and Saints will play two more tomorrow, with first pitch of game one of the doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m.
