Late Goal Clips NNU at No. 7 Western Washington

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene women's soccer took a scoreless draw into the 74th minute at No. 7 Western Washington on Saturday night but fell to the Vikings 1-0.

NNU moves to 10-2-4 on the year and 8-1-3 in GNAC play with just two games to play in the regular season. The Nighthawks have already clinched a GNAC Championships berth to the tournament that will be hosted in Nampa.

How It Happened

NNU and WWU battled through a scoreless 45 minutes to go into half tied at 0-0. Western Washington had 10 shots in the period with half going on goal, but Nighthawks keeper Alexis Montoya was up to the task with five saves.

The Vikings kept the pressure on in the second half, finally breaking through in the 74th minute off a loose ball from a free kick just outside the box.

WWU would not allow an NNU shot in the final 16 minutes, ending the game with an 18-6 advantage in attempts (7-2 on goal).

Nighthawks Notes

  • The loss snaps a 13-game unbeaten streak for the 25th-ranked Nighthawks, who had not suffered a defeat since August 27th
  • WWU's goal also broke a nine-game shutout streak for NNU, dating back to Sept. 22nd
  • Montoya finished with six saves in goal for the Nighthawks
  • Madison Grande had four of NNU's six attempts, with one going on goal
  • Alejandra Jaramillo had the other shot on goal, which may have been NNU's best chance with a lofted ball from outside the box that WWU's keeper had to tip over the crossbar

Next Up

The Nighthawks will remain on the road next week, visiting Montana State Billings on Thursday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
