FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Northwest Nazarene men's basketball earned a big road victory on Saturday, taking down Alaska Fairbanks in the Nanooks' home opener, 77-69.
How It Happened
- The Nighthawks started hot, jumping out to a 15-5 lead on a Timothy TenKley triple at the 15:10 mark of the opening half.
- The Nanooks slowly chipped away over the course of the half, though, tying the game at 27 with 3:59 left before taking a 29-27 lead moments later.
- The UAF advantage was short-lived, however, as NNU took the lead back on a pair of Christian Rose free throws and went on to close the half on a 10-0 run to lead 37-29 at the break.
- The Nighthawks were able to hold a 5 to 10-point advantage for most of the second half, but a Shadeed Shabazz triple cut the NNU lead to two, 61-59, with 6:15 to play.
- NNU responded with a 10-2 run, as a Tru Allen three-pointer built the lead back up to 71-61 with just two minutes remaining.
- It was all free throws from there, as NNU took the eight-point victory.
Nighthawks Notes
- NNU improves to 2-2 in GNAC play and 4-5 on the year.
- George Reidy led the Nighthawks with 21 points and six rebounds, shooting 53% from the field.
- Christian Rose just missed a double-double with 15 points and eight boards while also recording three blocks and two steals.
- Tru Allen was the only other Nighthawk in double figures, scoring 10 points and notching four steals.
- Kobe Terashima filled the stat sheet per usual, recording eight points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
- NNU held UAF to just 36.2% shooting for the game.
- The Nighthawks led for 92% of the night, allowing just the brief Nanook lead late in the first half.
- NNU won the battle down low, outrebounding UAF 39-33, outscoring the Nanooks 42-26 in the paint, and registering seven blocks.
- The Nighthawks improve to 9-11 against UAF in Fairbanks and 19-20 all-time against the Nanooks.
