Nighthawks Drop Thriller to Saints

NAMPA, Idaho - After not seeing game action for over a month, Northwest Nazarene men's soccer took Saint Martin's down to the wire but fell 4-3 on Thursday night.

NNU had not played since visiting Saint Martin's for two games on March 4 and 6, resulting in a draw and a win. The season series with the Saints now moves to 1-1-1 with one match to play on Saturday. NNU also moves to 3-2-1 overall.

The Saints and Nighthawks would trade goals throughout the contest, with SMU taking a one-goal lead and NNU tying things up three times before the Saints secured the game-winner.

SMU's first tally came in the 17th minute from Arjun Gill. NNU answered back almost immediately, as Sawyer Price sent a ball from his position in the box all the way down to the opposite end, where Nils Knosala was able to break free and knot the score at one.

Caden Martin responded for SMU with a goal in the 26th minute, and the Saints took a 2-1 lead into halftime. It wasn't until the 55th minute when NNU would tie things up again, as Brandon Parsio found the back of the net with an assist from Lukas Juodkunaitis.

Just three minutes later, though, Gill scored again for Saint Martin's to make it 3-2. Once again, NNU was up to the task and found the equalizer with Jimmy Koufidakis slotting home a great ball from Jake Levine in the 67th minute. The goal came just moments after Price denied Gill his third goal of the game on a penalty kick attempt.

SMU put through the game-winner in the 82nd minute, however, with Brian Licona giving the visitors the 4-3 advantage. NNU had a great chance to bring the match even again in the 87th minute, when Koufidakis found the back of the net but was called back for offsides.

Attempts were also nearly even in the match, with Saint Martin's recording 13 (8 on goal) to 15 (6 on goal) for the Nighthawks.

NNU will wrap up their 2021 spring season on Saturday with Senior Day, hosting the Saints at 11:00 a.m.
