NNU Takes Two from Saint Martin's

LACEY, Wash. - Northwest Nazarene baseball continued their hot streak, taking both games of Friday's doubleheader over Saint Martin's by scores of 6-2 and 3-0.

With the wins, No. 15 NNU improves to 15-3 overall and 9-1 in GNAC play.

The Nighthawks and Saints will play two more tomorrow, with first pitch of game one set for noon Pacific.

Game One: NNU 6, SMU 2

NNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first game, with Colton Moore doubling home Ryan Dearing and then scoring on a Shawn Grandmont single in the top of the first inning.

Four more runs came across in the third, starting with a two-RBI single from Grant Kerry. Nathan Cassara then hit a sacrifice fly to score Kerry, followed by an RBI double from Kyle Payne.

The Saints would put two runs on the board in the fifth, but that was all they could manage off of NNU's pitching staff. Shane Martin got the win, going six innings and allowing the two runs on just three hits while striking out seven. Nick Irwin and Blake McFadden combined to shut out SMU over the final three frames, allowing just one hit and striking out four.

Quentin Ayers had a 3-4 day at the plate for NNU, while John Gonzalez tallied three walks. Dearing, Moore, and Grandmont each also had two hits in the opener.

Game Two: NNU 3, SMU 0

Kyle Ethridge and Max Holtzclaw combined to shut out the Saints in game two, allowing just three hits and striking out 15 in the seven innings. Ethridge had a nearly untouchable start, going six innings and allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out 12. Holtzclaw earned the save, striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.

All of NNU's runs came on one swing of the bat, as Shawn Grandmont launched a homer that scored Moore and Cassara in the third inning.

Seven different Nighthawks had one hit in the nightcap.
