NNU Sweeps Saint Martin's, Grows Win Streak to Seven

LACEY, Wash. - Northwest Nazarene baseball kept their foot on the gas at Saint Martin's on Saturday, taking both games of the doubleheader by scores of 8-4 and 8-1 to sweep the Saints and earn their seventh-straight victory.

No. 15 NNU improves to 17-3 on the year and a blistering 11-1 in GNAC play, with four-game sweeps of Saint Martin's and Montana State Billings along with a 3-1 mark in the series against Central Washington.

The Nighthawks will have Easter weekend off next week before returning home to host Western Oregon for four games on April 9 and 10.

Game One: NNU 8, SMU 4

The Nighthawks struck first in game one, plating three runs in the third inning. Ryan Dearing got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly to score Walker Moore, followed by Shawn Grandmont singling home Cameron Duke. Grandmont would then steal second, drawing an errant throw that allowed Colton Moore to score from third.

The Saints got one back in the fourth, but Grant Kerry's RBI single in the fifth canceled it out. SMU would cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the sixth, though, before Grandmont launched a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Nighthawks a four-run cushion.

Both teams would tally one more run before it was over, with NNU's coming on another RBI single from Kerry in the ninth.

Ben Johnson earned the win on the mound, going five strong innings while allowing just one run, one hit, and one walk and striking out three. The combination of Haden Keller, Ty Hueckman, Blake McFadden, and Max Holtzclaw tossed the final four innings for NNU, with Holtzclaw getting the final out to earn the save.

Grandmont finished 3-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. Kerry was 2-4 with the two RBI, and Duke added two hits for the Nighthawks.

Game Two: NNU 8, SMU 1

After earning GNAC Pitcher of the Week honors last week, Schwehr backed that up with another dominating performance in game two, going all seven innings and allowing just one unearned run on three hits while striking out six. SMU's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh after an error with two outs.

Grandmont picked up right where he left off in game one with an RBI single in the first inning to score Dearing. The Nighthawks wouldn't score again until the fifth, where they put up two runs on a Johnson bases-loaded walk and a Keller sacrifice fly.

Grandmont plated another run in the seventh on an RBI triple, before NNU broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh. Walker Moore started the run with a two-run double, followed by a Cody Nisbet RBI groundout and a Dearing sacrifice fly.

Grandmont finished 3-3 with two RBI in the second game, bringing his daily total to 6-8 with six RBI. Five other Nighthawks tallied a hit in the nightcap.
