CALDWELL, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene men's soccer just refused to give up on Saturday, coming back steal a 5-4 win over College of Idaho in extra time after falling behind 4-1 just after halftime.
The Nighthawks then proceeded to score four unanswered goals, including the game-winner by
Jake Levine seven minutes into the overtime period, to win their official season opener.Â
NNU's pressure in the second half came from 17 shots, as the Nighthawks recorded 25 attempts in the game to C of I's 12.Â
Nevertheless, the Yotes took advantage of their opportunities early, scoring first in the 18th minute. NNU responded right away with a goal from
Brandon Parsio in the 19th minute, but C of I tallied in the 21st, 39th, and 47th minutes to take a 4-1 lead.Â
Ten minutes later,
Cameron Natvig started the Nighthawk comeback with a breakaway goal. Levine cut the deficit to one just four minutes later, tallying in the 61st minute off an assist from Parsio.Â
The equalizer came in the 79th minute, as
Lorenzo Valentini found the back of the net off a feed from
Max Hartley.
In extra time, Levine grabbed the golden goal on the only shot attempt by either team, finishing a cross from
Lukas Juodkunaitis to earn the Nighthawks the thrilling victory.
After not seeing game action for 20 days, NNU will now turn around quickly after just two days off as the visit Gonzaga on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. Pacific.
