CALDWELL, Idaho - In a game full of unique circumstances, Northwest Nazarene women's soccer defeated the College of Idaho 2-1 in overtime on Friday night.
First, it is definitely odd for a season-opener to come in February, much less in the midst of a snowstorm that blanked the field within minutes of the opening kick. Also, less than six hours before game time, the match was moved from Nampa to Caldwell due to the snow. Finally, of course, it took extra time to decide a winner.
Sierra Sanchez provided that game-winner for the Nighthawks, knocking in a cross from
McKenzie Buell just 100 seconds into the extra period.
NNU dominated possession on the evening, and outshot C of I 16-3 (6-2 on goal) in the match. The Nighthawks also had seven corners to the Yotes' three.
C of I got on the board first, tallying a score on their only shot on goal of the first half as the Yotes took advantage of a defensive miscue to go up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
NNU evened the game not long after halftime, getting the equalizer in stunning fashion as
Carolyn Moravec headed in a beautiful cross from
Magda Wronski off a corner.
The Nighthawks held possession on their attacking half for nearly all of the second period, and the attack finally wore C of I down at the beginning of overtime when Sanchez was able to find space to put in the golden goal.
NNU will now have two weeks off before resuming their spring season at Idaho State on Feb. 26, with the game time set for 1:00 p.m.
