BURNABY, B.C. – Northwest Nazarene men's soccer suffered a heartbreaking defeat across the border on Friday, falling to Simon Fraser 1-0 on a goal in the final moments.
How It Happened
- The game was originally supposed to be played on Thursday night, and the two teams did end up playing about 43 scoreless minutes, but after multiple delays due to dense fog, the decision was made to call it a night and play a full 90 minutes on Friday.
- The first 88 minutes on Friday were much of the same, with neither team able to put a goal on the board. NNU had just four shots in the match, putting two of them on goal.
- Simon Fraser finally broke through with 90 seconds to play, when on a counter an SFU player was brought down from behind just outside the box on the near side. Niko Papakyriakopoulos stepped up to take the free kick and placed a curling shot just out of the reach of NNU's Sawyer Price and in past the far post for the game-winner.
Nighthawks Notes
- Price was very strong in goal, saving each of the first 10 shots that Simon Fraser put on frame.
- NNU falls to 3-3 in GNAC play, dropping to fourth in the conference standings with four matches remaining in the regular season.
