IRVINE, Calif. - Northwest Nazarene men's basketball made it two wins in a row to open the season with a 93-84 victory on the road at Concordia-Irvine on Thursday night.
With the win, NNU starts a tough road trip on the right foot, as the Nighthawks will play three games in three days including a visit to No. 24 Point Loma.
Five Nighthawks were in double figures, led by
Ezekiel Alley with 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
Kobe Terashima broke out for 18 points on 7-9 shooting, while
James Nelson added 15 points and six boards.
Sam Roth finished with 12 points, including 2-2 from deep, and
George Reidy rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with 10 points.
Both teams shot well, finishing over 50% from the field and from deep. NNU had the advantage, though, hitting 56% of their shots from the field and going an impressive 8-13 (61.5%) from beyond the arc. The Nighthawks also outrebounded the Eagles 32-29, including 10 boards on the offensive end.
For the second-straight game, NNU started hot, jumping out to a 17-9 advantage after seven minutes of action. The Eagles countered with a 13-1 run, however, taking a 22-18 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
CUI led by as much as 12 in the opening half, but NNU rallied back for 14 of the final 16 points of the half as a layup by Roth just before the buzzer brought the Nighthawks within two, 44-42.
That momentum carried over into the second period, as a Terashima and-one at the 16:34 mark put NNU up eight, 56-48. Nelson extended the advantage to NNU's largest of the game at 16 on a layup with just over 10 minutes to play.
The Eagles put up a fight at the end, bringing the Nighthawks' advantage back down to single digits, but it was too little, too late as NNU took the nine-point win, 93-84.
The Nighthawks will turn around quickly to face a tough Point Loma squad at 4:00 p.m. PT tomorrow.
