SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Riding a 2-0 start to the season, Northwest Nazarene men's basketball ran into a very talented Point Loma squad on Friday, falling to the Sea Lions 87-57.
PLNU, who has made the NCAA postseason in each of the last three seasons, was able to shut down the Nighthawk offense, holding NNU to just 35.9% shooting from the field and 19% from deep. Meanwhile, the Sea Lions shot 50% from the field, 48.5% from beyond the arc, and went a perfect 7-7 from the line.
Rebounding was equal at 36 boards apiece, while NNU's bench outscored PLNU's 31-19.Â
Thirteen Nighthawks scored in the contest, led by George Reidy's nine points and four boards. Ezekiel Alley and Sam Roth both had eight points, while Kobe Terashima had five points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Gabriel Murphy got NNU on the board with a layup after PLNU opened with five straight points. Terashima then converted an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 7-5 in favor of Point Loma at the 16:40 mark.
PLNU's offense was hot from the beginning, though, making four threes in the first ten minutes to take a 24-12 lead. The Sea Lions' eighth triple of the opening half came with just two seconds remaining, and extended the home team's lead to 19 at the break.
Alley opened the second half with a layup for NNU, but PLNU came right back with a triple on the other end. Eight more threes fell in the second period for Point Loma as they slowly extended their lead throughout the frame, eventually taking the 87-57 victory.
The Nighthawks will finish their three games in three days trip to California tomorrow when they visit Biola at 2:00 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m MT.
