NAMPA, Idaho – Thanks to monster games from
Shawn Grandmont and
John Gonzalez, the Northwest Nazarene baseball team swept Concordia on Friday in a GNAC doubleheader.
Grandmont hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning of the opener and Gonzalez hit a walk-off single in the nightcap.
NNU defeated Concordia 7-4 and 8-7 to pick up two more wins.
"It was a pretty good offensive day for the most part," NNU coach
Joe Schaefer said. "They did a really good job and showed some resiliency battling back from being down a couple of times."
In the opener,
Parker Price hit a two-run blast in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
Cody Nisbet had a run-scoring single and NNU trailed 4-3 headed to the bottom of the eighth.
Price singled leading off, Gonzalez doubled and Grandmont crushed a three-run home run to left center to put the Nighthawks on top 6-4.
Kyle Gracey added a run-scoring single and then Max Holtclaw slammed the door shut in the ninth for the save.
Ty Hueckman earned the win in relief, striking out eight in four innings.
"We weren't super sharp on the mound early, but Ty came in and did an awesome job," Schaefer said. "Their starter was pretty good, but we started to make some adjustments later in the first game and got some big swings when it mattered."
Price finished 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Grandmont had three RBIs,
Ryan Dearing was 2-for-4 and
Quentin Ayers was 2-for-4.
In the nightcap, Gonzalez and Grandmont hit back-to-back homers in the first inning but Concordia took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the third when Gonzalez hit another solo homer to make it 4-3.
NNU (7-7 overall, 5-1 GNAC) tied it on an error in the fifth, before Concordia put up a three spot in the sixth for a 7-4 lead.
In the bottom half,
Isaac Hines scored on a balk, Price singled in a run and Gonzalez hit a high fly ball to left field that dropped for a double and scored the tying run.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when
Colton Moore reached on an error, moved up to second on a Dearing bunt and scored on a two-out single to right by Gonzalez.
"(Gonzalez) got punched out a couple of times early, but his at bats got better as the day went on," Schaefer said. "The offense kind of picked us up today, because we weren't super sharp on the mound."
Freshman
Kyle Ethridge started because
Ben Johnson was sick and gave up four runs in five innings.
Gonzalez was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, Price and Grandmont each had two hits and an RBI and Hines had a hit and a run scored. Holtzclaw got the win, pitching 1/3 of an inning in relief.
"The positive takeaway from the whole thing is that we were down early in both games and there was no panic," Schaefer said. "Everybody was pretty confident we were going to hit and we ended up scoring runs late, which is a good sign."
NNU and Concordia (4-11, 3-3) play another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. MST on Saturday.
