Nighthawks sweep Saturday to sweep weekend

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene baseball team swept Concordia on Saturday to win all four games of their Great Northwest Athletic Conference series.

The Nighthawks won the opener 14-6 and the nightcap 2-1.

In the opener, Tyler Tan was sharp on the mound, allowing three runs – two earned – in seven innings on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Brennan Patterson earned the save with 1.2 shutout innings and three strikeouts.

John Gonzalez continued his torrid hitting, blasting a two-run shot in the first inning giving him three homers in two games.

"We did a great job offensively all game," NNU coach Joe Schaefer said. "Tyler and Brennan Patterson threw really well and we did a lot of things well."

Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, Colton Moore was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, Parker Price was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Quentin Ayers was 1-for-4 with three RBIs and Shawn Grandmont was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

In the nightcap, Ben Johnson was dominant on the mound a day after being too sick to pitch.

He allowed one unearned run on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts to earn the victory. Max Holtzclaw struck out one to earn the save.

"Ben was great and Max did a great job slamming the door," Schaefer said. "We weren't great offensively in the last game, but we did enough. It's great to get a conference sweep and hopefully we can keep it up next week."

Kyle Payne was 2-for-2 with a solo home run, Ayers was 1-for-2 and Price was 1-for-3 as the Nighthawks managed just four hits, but it was enough to earn the sweep.

NNU (9-7 overall, 7-1 GNAC) hosts Saint Martin's for four games next weekend.
