NNU earns draw against Western Oregon

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team knew what Western Oregon was going to do Saturday.

The Wolves were going to play long ball after long ball and try to earn free kicks and corner kicks to take advantage of their strong set piece ability.

And while the Nighthawks for the most part stood tough, a late own goal off of a corner for Western Oregon resulted in a 1-1 tie in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at NNU Field.

"They are good on sets," NNU coach Mary Trigg said. "The film showed that and they scored on a set. We have to score more than one goal so we don't get punished by that."

The Nighthawks took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Rikki Myers in the 41st minute. The NNU junior collected a turnover by the Western Oregon (3-3-2 overall, 0-1-1 GNAC) keeper, took a few dribbles and then hammered it over the keeper's head.

"I saw she was off her line and I was like, 'Why not? Let's try it.'" said Myers of her seventh goal of the season, tying her career-high.

Trigg said she was yelling for Myers to pass it to a teammate, but was pleased with her star forward's recognition of the goalie's placement on the field.

The Nighthawks (3-4-1, 0-1-1) had chances after that, but couldn't find the back of the net.

"I don't think we are utilizing our talent enough up top," Myers said. "That is both a team effort and an individual effort. It takes the confidence to dribble at someone or to decide to make the pass. Our forwards individually can work on that, and as a team we can be a little more dynamic if we work on switching the ball."

While the Nighthawks ended a three-game losing streak with the tie, it still left a sour taste in their mouths as they felt they should have won the match.

"We definitely felt we should have won," Myers said. "But it's always good to get points. We'll take it."

Alexis Montoya made six saves in goal. The Nighthawks had 13 shots, including seven on target.

"We are frustrated," Trigg said. "We knew they were good on sets and you can't necessarily avoid giving up sets, but we need to score more goals. We just need to get a little more patient in the attack third."

NNU hosts Montana State Billings at 5 p.m. Thursday as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. It will be the first games under the new lights at NNU Field.
