NAMPA, Idaho – Earlier this season, the Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team had a player score four goals in a game.
On Thursday, four different players scored for the Nighthawks.
Which one is better? Well, it's an embarrassment of riches that it is even a question.
The Nighthawks (4-4-1 overall, 1-1-1 GNAC) defeated Montana State Billings 4-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at NNU Field.
"It's fun to see girls get rewarded that work so hard," NNU coach
Mary Trigg said. "They really listened to what we said was going to be on this game and followed through on the game plan. We had a lot of people step up."
Rikki Myers, who was that player to score a GNAC record four goals in a game earlier this season, had a goal and an assist Thursday. Sophomores
Ashley Parton and
Jenna Turner and freshman
Makayla Roggow all scored as well.
"The last few games we haven't been finishing the shots we have been taking," Parton said. "This just shows that we don't have just one player on our team – everyone can score. Everyone is able to."
Parton opened the scoring by taking advantage of the Yellowjackets (3-3-2, 2-1-0) defense which was playing a high line. The danger for a team playing its defense near midfield is they can get burned by offenses that time their runs correctly.
That's what Parton and Myers did on their goals – both of which happened within 30 seconds of each other.
"We wanted to pull them out and make diagonal runs," Parton said. "I was on the opposite side and my sister (
Maddy Parton) called it and passed it through."
From there, it was just
Ashley Parton and the goalie. She booted it into the net and the Nighthawks led 1-0 in the 10th minute.
Just 18 seconds later, Myers broke free and received a through ball from
Brooke Felzien and slotted it into the net for a 2-0 lead. The goal was Myers' eighth of the season, which is a new career high.
The score remained that way until the 75th minute when Roggow, a defender, kneed in her second goal of the season off a corner kick by Myers.
"I was just watching the ball and adjusted my run to the ball," she said. "It's the only time I get to go up top. It's my only opportunity."
Turner scored in the 90th minute after stealing a pass by the goalkeeper. Turner has only played 19 minutes this season.
"She came in so fit this season and every day in practice she works hard," Trigg said. "She deserved that goal."
It all added up to the first GNAC win of the season for the Nighthawks.
"It was a must-win game so this was extremely important," Roggow said. "Saturday is also a must-win game."
The Nighthawks host Simon Fraser at 12 p.m. Saturday. No word on who will score all the goals that day.
