Nighthawks drop GNAC opener to Falcons

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team's phrase this season is 'Nothing fazes us.'

So, even though the Nighthawks dropped their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener Thursday 3-0 to Seattle Pacific they are already looking forward to their next game.

"Even though we lost we need to move on to the next thing," NNU defender Chandler Kauffman said. "We are positive with our team and we don't get down on each other and we move forward as a team."

Sierra Smith scored in the sixth minute on a low shot that squeezed past goalie Alexis Montoya. The Falcons (3-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 GNAC) doubled their lead in the 44th minute on a goal by AJ DePinto off of a free kick. SPU scored its final goal off of a corner kick.

"If we are tighter in defensive sets, it's a whole different game," NNU coach Mary Trigg said. "The biggest thing is how we respond. We can't let one game become two."

NNU (3-4-0, 0-1-0) had opportunities to score, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Nighthawks finished with 11 shots, including two on goal and also had eight corner kicks.

"We were getting down the flanks and beating people toward the end line," said Kauffman of positives the team could take from the match. "Defensively, we were shutting them down we just let some poor goals in. In the midfield, once we were connecting and switching we looked very good."

Alexis Montoya made eight saves in goal.

"We didn't execute our game plan enough," Trigg said. "The run of play was pretty good in the second half, but we have to take care of 50-50 balls."

Seattle Pacific finished with 22 shots, including 11 on goal. Kaylie Nelson made two saves in goal for the Falcons.

"We just need to focus on Saturday's game," Kauffman said. "We need to take this game and learn from it and from that use what we did poorly and fix it."

NNU hosts Western Oregon at 2 p.m. Saturday.
