NNU baseball splits at Saint Martin's

LACEY, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene senior Cooper Webster spun a three-hit shutout as the Nighthawks earned a split Friday at Saint Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

Webster allowed no runs on three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts as NNU (9-9 overall, 5-5 GNAC) won the nightcap 8-0 after falling 3-1 in the opener.

"Webster threw a gem," NNU coach Joe Schaefer said. "Their starter pitched well through the fourth inning, but we started to get to him in the fifth. Jesse Hilyard did a great job adjusting from Game 1 to Game 2. I'm proud of how the guys grinded out at bats and finally got to hit some pitches left over the plate."

Hilyard was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a solo home run and a double, while Greg Casper was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Cameron Duke added a two-run single, while Shawn Grandmont had an RBI and a double.

The game was scoreless through four, but the Nighthawks blew it open thanks to a five-run seventh inning.

Grandmont opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly followed by a Parker Price run-scoring single. Hilyard then went deep in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. Duke and Casper added two-run singles.

In the opener, Dylan Cure and Nick Irwin were sharp but the offense struggled against Saint Martin's starter Aaron Shoup.

Cure allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, while Irwin gave up one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

"We struggled offensively in the first game," Schaefer said. "Their pitcher did a great job of getting ahead in the count and keeping us off balance. Dylan and Irwin both pitched well, but we couldn't muster much offensively."

Kyle Redford, Rocco Ferrari and Casper each had a hit for the Nighthawks.

The teams play another doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. PDT on Saturday.
