LACEY, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene baseball team was swept by Saint Martin's on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Nighthawks (9-11 overall, 5-7 GNAC) lost the opener 5-4 and the nightcap 7-1.
"We weren't good today," NNU coach
Joe Schaefer said. "Not sharp on the mound, behind in counts and missing over the plate. We didn't play good defense and our offensive struggles continue.
"We're having a hard time sticking with the plan from an offensive standpoint."
In the opener, NNU took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by
Greg Casper, a
Dylan Cure RBI double and a run-scoring groundout by
Rocco Ferrari. The Saints rallied for a 4-3 lead, but the Nighthawks tied it at 4-4 in the top of the seventh when
Shawn Grandmont scored on a wild pitch.
The Saints won it on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh and their pitching held on from there.
Parker Price was 2-for-4.
Jesse Hilyard allowed four runs – three earned – on seven hits with three walks and one strikeout.
In the nightcap, it was all Saints as Saint Martin's scored three in the second and four in the third.
Starter
Ben Johnson gave up seven runs – four earned – on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Grandmont drove in the lone run in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single.
"We had opportunities, but aren't capitalizing because we aren't committed to the plan," Schaefer said. "Hopefully we make some strides next week in practice."
NNU hosts Western Oregon in a pair of doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.
