NAMPA, Idaho – You get a goal. And you get a goal. And you get a goal.
After nearly three and a half games without a goal, the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team is suddenly on fire.
The Nighthawks defeated Concordia 3-1 on Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at NNU Field. The win gave NNU a sweep on the weekend and seven goals scored in two games.
Little used
Dominic Abdel-Ahad had the game-winner on a beautiful header at the top of the 18-yard box.
"That is awesome. I'm just as excited for him to score goals as I am for me to score goals," said
Jake Levine, who had two his own on the day. "As a striker, I don't care who scores as long as the team is scoring and doing the right thing.
"He went in and scored just an amazing goal and it gave us the momentum and the will and the drive to get the next one. So, it was awesome to see."
The Nighthawks (6-8-0 overall, 2-6-0 GNAC) led most of the match 1-0 on a Levine goal off a pretty give and go by
Braeden Anderson to
Grant Larson in the 6th minute.
NNU had chances after that, but failed to convert and a defensive miscue led to Concordia's Nicholas Denley scoring unassisted in the 66th minute.
But the Nighthawks responded quickly.
Abdel-Ahad came on to give Levine a breather and almost scored right away, missing an open net. He got his redemption a few minutes later, though, heading a ball into the upper right on a pass by
Brandon Parsio in the 73rd minute.
"Every time you don't get a lot of playing time you just search for that moment and you have to be there when the coach needs," Abdel-Ahad said. "I was there and along with Jake, helped the team to get the win, which is the most important."
It was Abdel-Ahad's first goal of the season and second in his career.
Seven minutes later, Parsio again got free down the left flank and sent a perfect cross in to a wide-open Levine. The junior forward calmly lifted his head and hammered the ball home into the right corner for a 3-1 lead in the 80th minute.
"Coach (Adam) Pearce told me to use my speed to take (the defense) on and have confidence in myself and that is what I tried to do," Parsio said. "I'm just glad that Jake and Dom could finish those two. They were great finishes. Really composed."
The win was the second in a row for the Nighthawks, but the schedule now gets much tougher. NNU heads to Western Washington on Thursday and Simon Fraser on Saturday.
"The next two games are tough, but we will have a chance," Abdel-Ahad said. "This team has grown so much. I think we have a good chance to get something out of that trip and we will give our best."
Alex Nadermann made four saves in goal for the Nighthawks, while Mathias Eriksen made three for the Cavaliers (7-7-0, 4-5-0).
"It's definitely a good feeling to score so many goals," Pearce said. "We got the monkey off our back a little bit. We really are not doing a whole lot differently, just trusting the process and believing in each other. If you keep at it, you get rewarded eventually."
And that has certainly been the case this week.
