Nighthawks pick up crucial victory

LACEY, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team desperately needed a victory to remain in the hunt for a playoff spot.

A pair of unlikely goal scorers and some solid defense delivered a 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory at Saint Martin's.

"Good road wins are really hard to come by and shutouts are hard to get," NNU coach Mary Trigg said. "I think it gives us a different mindset going into Western Washington and brings the confidence up."

Freshman Carolyn Moravec scored her first career goal in the seventh minute off an assist from Ashley Parton. Moravec was making just her third career start and her shot ended an 401-minute scoreless drought for the Nighthawks (6-7-2 overall, 3-4-2 GNAC).

Senior midfielder Tennyson Young scored five minutes later off an assist by Rikki Myers. It was just Young's third goal of her career.

"Carol played fantastic and her goal was well deserved," Trigg said. "(Both goals) were awesome. It relieved the pressure from other people who have a lot of pressure on them."

Alexis Montoya made four saves in goal to earn the shutout.

The victory keeps the Nighthawks firmly in the hunt for a GNAC playoff spot. The top four teams advance to the postseason and the win moves NNU into fifth in the standings with three games remaining.

Western Washington has clinched a spot in the tournament, while Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Central Washington are the teams ahead of NNU currently. Concordia is right in the thick of the race as well.

NNU plays at Western Washington at 8 p.m. MDT on Saturday, before closing the regular season at Central Washington and Seattle Pacific.
