Anderson scores at the death to lift Nighthawks

NAMPA, Idaho – It's been a trying couple of weeks for the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team.

The Nighthawks hadn't scored in three matches. They were winless in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. And it felt like nothing was going right.

But the team remained positive and kept working hard and it all paid off Thursday night.

Playing in sub-freezing temperatures, Braeden Anderson scored with 1 second left in overtime to lift NNU to a 4-3 win against Saint Martin's.

"The ball came in from Skyler (Munroe) and I saw Jake (Levine) in front of me," Anderson said. "I let him have it, he won it and then it just sat there on a platter. It was an open goal and I finished it."

The goal completed a wild game that saw six yellow cards, a penalty kick and a fracas near the end of overtime.

Through it all the Nighthawks kept battling.

Ty Iannone won a free kick on the right side of the 18-yard box. Munroe told teammates he was going back post and hit the ball hard with six seconds remaining. Levine jumped up to head it and was bumped, sending his shot to the ground and right to Anderson's feet.

The defender immediately banged in his first goal of the season.

"It's an unexplainable feeling," Munroe said. "We needed this. We all had our heads up in the locker room and had positive energy going, but to finally get this … hopefully it can boost us into the last five games in conference play."

The game was nearly a repeat of the teams' first matchup that Saint Martin's won 3-2 in overtime.

This time, though, NNU (5-8-0 overall, 1-6-0 GNAC) would not be denied.

After falling behind 1-0 on a beautiful free kick to the head of Jose Marquez in the 24th minute, Munroe tied the game at 1-1 in the 39th off assists by Landon Butler and Iannone. Butler hit a long through ball and the speedy Iannone chased it down, crossed it into the box and Munroe ended the scoring drought with a shot into the lower right.

Munroe scored again in the 50th minute off a cross by Aoci Watambela.

"The fact that we scored four goals is a ton of goals," NNU coach Adam Pearce said. "The guys did the same thing we have always been doing we just finished them. It was great commitment and great desire. Sometimes it is about tactics in football and sometimes it is about heart and we had a lot of heart to match our quality tonight.

"The guys really gutted it out and had some quality finishes."

Saint Martin's (7-6-2, 2-5-1) tied the game on a penalty kick by Brandon Madsen after a hand ball was called in the box in the 57th minute.

Levine then answered with his sixth goal of the season in the 59th minute off a pass by Munroe.

"Since the beginning of the season we have had a plan and we've been working every single week to perfect that plan," Levine said. "Tonight, we perfected it and did exactly what we're supposed to do. We were patient, we passed the ball, we didn't force anything and when opportunities were presented, we finished."

Saint Martin's tied the game again on an Oscar Aguilar free kick that wrapped around the Nighthawks' wall and curled into the lower left corner of the net in the 70th minute.

It remained tied until Anderson's fantastic finish.

"I had probably the worst calf cramp in my life celebrating afterward," Levine said. "It is certainly a good feeling to have all of our hard work pay off. To see our team stick together and fight through it and continue every week to try to perfect the plan to get the results we need, it is pretty nice to finally get one."

NNU hosts Concordia at 2 p.m. Saturday.
