BILLINGS, Mont. – Northwest Nazarene men's soccer coach
Adam Pearce has been challenging his team on dealing with adversity this season.
He never could have imagined what they'd have to deal with Saturday, though.
With half of his team laid out with a stomach virus that caused the staff to quarantine players in the hotel and have sick rooms and healthy rooms, the Nighthawks then dealt with myriad issues caused by a snowstorm.
At the end of the day, they lost 1-0 to Montana State Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.
"I think how they responded to the health matters, game time change, facility change, weather, all that kind of stuff – to me that is a really positive step in their mentality competitively," Pearce said. "We've got to continue to come back to work and know that as we create chances we have to finish the task too."
The game was originally scheduled for 3 p.m. at Montana State Billings, but five inches of snow made that field unplayable. So, it was moved to an 8 p.m. start at Rocky Mountain College's football stadium that has a turf field. Playing in 31-degree temperature in driving snow, the Nighthawks hung around throughout the game but couldn't find the back of the net.
"That has been our Achilles' heel," Pearce said. "We created some dangerous chances, but that final piece just hasn't been there. Whether it was the final pass or the final shot."
The Nighthawks (4-8 overall, 0-6 GNAC) have now been shut out three consecutive games.
Alex Nadermann made six saves in goal, while
Grant Larson had NNU's lone shot on goal in his first action since Sept. 27.
The Yellowjackets scored on a goal by Ignacio Crespo in the 73rd minute.
NNU returns home to host Saint Martin's at 7 p.m. Thursday under the lights.
