NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team lost 3-0 to Western Washington on a blustery Saturday afternoon at NNU Field in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
The Nighthawks had two shots find the post as their luck at finding the back of the net continues to be bad. NNU (4-7-0 overall, 0-5-0 GNAC) was shut out in both games this week.
"The players are frustrated and we are certainly frustrated," NNU coach
Adam Pearce said. "It is a game of inches. The game rewards workers and persistence so you have to work through it, you have to be positive and continue to be willing to work for it and it will eventually come."
Skyler Munroe had a shot bounce off the right post and roll across the mouth of the goal before trickling wide in the first half. In the second half,
Jake Levine got off a rocket of a shot that hit the right post.
That's just the way things have gone for the Nighthawks in GNAC play so far this season. The Nighthawks, who have lost five matches in a row, will try for a win next Saturday at Montana State Billings.
"It comes down to being a competitor and you have to look for the challenge," Pearce said. "This was a fire and I ran into it. I want this challenge and the guys have to want it to and know that no one is going to feel sorry for us.
"You have to show up and go to work every day. Luckily, with college soccer, you get to go ahead and do it again next week."
On Saturday against the GNAC-leading Vikings (7-3-1, 4-0-1), the Nighthawks mixed up their starting lineup a bit as sophomore
Ty Iannone and
Aidan McGinty got the nod. It was McGinty's second start of the season and Iannone's first.
NNU also subbed in
Omar Sosa and
Ethann Bowman, who were making just their second and first appearances of the season, respectively.
"We were just trying to get a spark to the game," Pearce said. "We've been pressed and challenged and we are not mature enough as a club yet. We were giving those guys some opportunity in live fire, which gives us an idea where they are at."
Iannone was playing forward for the first time and had a shot on goal.
Sawyer Price made seven saves in the loss.
