Nighthawks fall in overtime to Cavaliers

NAMPA, Idaho – Sometimes the ball just doesn't bounce your way.

The Northwest Nazarene women's soccer team lost 1-0 on Thursday on an own goal in overtime to Concordia in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match.

"An own goal is a tough way to end an overtime game," NNU coach Mary Trigg said. "We fought and it is just unfortunate. It wasn't for a lack of us going at them. It was just unlucky. Unlucky."

The goal happened seven minutes into the first overtime as a long ball was played into the corner on NNU's half of the field.

Concordia (3-7-1 overall, 1-3-1 GNAC) stole the ball and crossed it into the box and after it bounced around a bit, a Cavaliers player kicked it toward the net and a Nighthawks player made a play on the ball but it squirted off her leg and past goalkeeper Alexis Montoya for the winner.

Both teams had chances to score in regulation with Concordia hitting the post twice in the first half and a Jade Zimmer shot hitting the crossbar in the second half.
Montoya made 10 saves in the for the Nighthawks (5-6-1, 2-3-1).

With the loss, the Nighthawks dropped from a tie for fourth place into sixth in the conference. The top four teams advance to the GNAC tournament and NNU has six regular-season games left.

"I told the girls afterward that our destiny is still in our own hands," Trigg said. "Good teams figure out how to respond after disappointments."

NNU will get a chance to bounce back at 12 p.m. MDT on Saturday at Western Oregon. The Wolves are currently tied for third in the GNAC.
