LACEY, Wash. –
Rafael Junqueira scored in the 99th minute to give the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team a 3-2 victory in overtime Thursday at Saint Martin's.
Junqueira also scored in the first half, giving him two goals for the second consecutive game.
"This was a very important win for us on the road against a strong Saint Martin's side," NNU coach
Joel DeLass said. "It's really difficult to win on the road in the GNAC, but the whole team stepped up today in a hard battle and found a way to get it done."
The Nighthawks (2-5-1 overall, 2-0-0 GNAC) fell behind 1-0 in the 18th minute, but Junqueira tied it up in the final minute of the first half off of an assist by
Logan Wood.
Jake Levine then put NNU on top 2-1 off an assist from
Brandon Parsio.
NNU then gave up a late goal in the 84th minute to the Saints (3-6-0, 1-2-0) – a problem that has plagued the Nighthawks this season – but Junqueira sent them home winners off an assist by Levine.
"It's really nice to see the guys learning from situations we found ourselves in earlier this year," DeLass said, "and getting a win in a game where we gave up a late equalizer."
After starting the season winless through six games, the Nighthawks have now won consecutive conference matches. NNU is back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Montana State Billings.
