NNU volleyball swept by Simon Fraser

NAMPA, Idaho – In a season full of losses this one might have been the one that hurt the most.

Northwest Nazarene was swept by Simon Fraser 25-14, 25-7, 25-14 on Saturday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at Johnson Sports Center.

"I think this is the first time all year I've maybe been disappointed in how we played," NNU coach Doug English said. "Effort wise the rest of the (year) we played really hard. We have to be as good as we can be, whatever that is. And I don't think we were at our best tonight which is the disappointing part."

The Nighthawks (1-10 overall, 1-3 GNAC) struggled in nearly every aspect of the game against the Clan (5-5, 2-2). They had 21 kills and 19 errors. They had two service errors. And their defense could do little to slow down a Simon Fraser attack that had a blistering .324 attacking percentage.

"I think we are still trying to find our mojo," NNU libero Shayli Siegfreid said. "We're not used to all the variables. We're used to just meshing on the court. The last few years we have just meshed on the court, so we are trying to find the people who will and who have the chemistry on the court to get the job done."

The seven points NNU scored in the second set ties the least amount of points in a non-fifth set since rally scoring was introduced in 2001. It was the first time the Nighthawks had scored in single digits in a set since 2013.

"It is a really new team and with the newness and being in a really tough conference it is not a good combination," Siegfreid said. "I think it is mental. We have played teams really close and lost games. We've had a hard time closing games which hurts our confidence because it goes down as an L on our record when we played a really good game."

On Saturday, Siegfreid had 13 digs, Kayla Sale had five kills and 13 digs, Cami Heninger had seven kills and seven digs and Megan Nelson had 20 assists.

The Nighthawks will try to bounce back Thursday at Concordia.

"I feel like it can definitely turn around," Siegfreid said.
