PUEBLO, Colo. – The Northwest Nazarene University baseball team blasted the ball all around – and out – of the yard Thursday.
Unfortunately, so did the Nighthawks opponent.
NNU fell 10-9 and 10-7 in a nonconference doubleheader against Colorado State University Pueblo.
"We are starting to show signs of handling different types of pitchers with our offense," NNU coach
Rocke Musgraves said. "Learning how to win can be tough sometimes and I think we are going through that right now."
Casey Sheehan, Justin Folz, Zach Penrod and
Kyle Redford all went deep in the first three innings to give the Nighthawks a 6-4 lead.
The Thunderwolves answered with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to take a 9-6 lead.
NNU (2-6 overall) wasn't done, though, as Penrod blasted his second homer of the game in the fifth to make it 9-7. Dylan Cure singled and
Larsson Chapman doubled setting the table for Parker Price's two-run single up the middle to tie the game.
Pueblo took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as Chris Devery hit a two-out double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a double by Jake Boyd.
Penrod finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, while Sheehan was 2-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBIs. Price finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Cooper Webster (0-1) took the loss in relief.
"I was pleased with how the top of our lineup swung the bat," Musgraves said. "Parker Price continues to put great at bats together and Casey Sheehan and Zach Penrod are starting to heat up."
In the nightcap, the Nighthawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second.
Their first two runs scored on errors, including Justin Folz reaching on an error by the pitcher, going to second on the throw, then advancing to third on an error by the first baseman and scoring on the throw.
After a walk and a single, Sheehan hit a three-run blast to left and Penrod followed with a solo shot.
But the Nighthawks pitching couldn't make it stand up.
Pueblo answered with four runs in the bottom half of the second thanks to four walks, a balk, a passed ball and two singles.
The Thunderwolves took the lead for good in the fourth, scoring six runs on three hits and two errors in the inning.
Sheehan finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Penrod, Price and Ryan Connor had the other hits for NNU.
Brennan Patterson (0-1) took the loss in relief.
The teams will play single games against each other Friday and Saturday.
