NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball team has been on a bit of a roller coaster lately.
Win two games. Lose two games. Wash, rinse, repeat.
So when Simon Fraser pulled within two points midway through the second half Thursday, it certainly felt like the roller coaster car was at the top of the hill with nothing but downhill track in front of it.
This time, though, the Nighthawks used a monster run to pull away for an 82-69 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory.
"Every practice, we talk about fighting all 40 minutes," guard Khalil Thompson said. "I thought the team fought for 40 minutes and we fought to the end."
Six players scored during the 16-2 run that helped the Nighthawks gain control and finish off their second consecutive win.
Jayden Bezzant had a layup and a jumper, Thompson hit a floater,
Maurice Jones had a pair of strong layups, Obi Megwa had a layup, Felix White made a bucket and
Nikola Prvulj capped the run with a basket.
"When we are all together and we are all gelling, we are a tough team to beat," Thompson said. "And we were a tough team to beat tonight and I think we'll be a tough team to beat the rest of the season."
Five players scored in double figures for NNU (11-8 overall, 7-6 GNAC) led by Jones' eighth double-double of the season. The senior forward finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Bezzant added 16 points, Thompson and
Sam Roth had 12 each and Megwa chipped in with 10 points and four assists.
"We went for every ball and we are trying to not give up on every single play," White said. "It's just trusting the process and trying to do what the coaches ask us to do."
White and fellow big-man Olamilekan Adetunji continued their solid recent play. White had six points and five rebounds, making 4-of-6 from the free-throw line and provided a physical presence inside. Adetunji had four points and seven rebounds, including a dunk in the first half.
"I think I have to be physical every single game," said the 6-foot-9, 235-pound White. "I'm going to keep working on that – it is something I want to bring every single night."
The Nighthawks host Western Washington at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The Vikings are in second place in the conference and held off NNU by a single point earlier this season.
"This is two bounce back wins in a row," Thompson said. "We're going to keep pushing. We feel we can beat any team in this league."
