NNU men run out of gas late in loss

NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball team ran out of gas late in Saturday's 95-84 loss to Western Washington in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.

The Nighthawks couldn't get a stop when they needed one down the stretch and gave up an 11-3 run over the final 4:47 after pulling within 84-81.

"We kept responding to their runs throughout the game," NNU coach Paul Rush said, "but we couldn't get some key stops down the stretch."

Western Washington came into the game having lost three in a row after winning its first 10 conference games. Using balanced scoring and a significant height advantage, the Vikings closed out the Nighthawks on Saturday.

Maurice Jones poured in 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including making a career high seven 3-pointers. He also grabbed five rebounds. Obi Megwa added 22 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Sam Roth had 16 points including two 3-pointers.

"I loved the effort our guys played with tonight," Rush said. "They continually battled against a very good Western team."

The Nighthawks (11-9, 7-7 GNAC) head to Alaska next weekend for an important two-game set. They are in a tie for sixth place with Alaska and one game ahead of Anchorage. The top six teams advance to the GNAC tournament.

Daulton Hommes had a game-high 29 points, also making seven 3-pointers. He seemed to match Jones every time the Vikings needed a big shot. Trey Drechsel added 25 points and nine rebounds and Deandre Dickson had 19 points and eight rebounds.

Western Washington (16-6, 11-3) made 14 of 25 from behind the arc, well above their season average of 31.4 percent.
