Clutch free throws help Nighthawks earn road victory

PORTLAND, Ore. – Khalil Thompson and Maurice Jones made two free throws each in the final 11 seconds as the Northwest Nazarene University men's basketball team defeated Concordia 69-64 on Thursday in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup.

Thompson made two with 11 seconds left and Jones iced the game with his pair with 1.2 seconds to go.

The Nighthawks (9-6 overall, 5-4 GNAC) led 56-45 midway through the second half before Concordia closed to within 58-56 with 6 minutes to go.
NNU pushed its lead back out to 65-58 thanks to a Thompson putback, two free throws by Marko Lepovic and a 3-pointer by Thompson.

Concordia wouldn't go away, however, as Jarrett Gray made back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the lead to 65-64. After a missed NNU shot, the Cavaliers went to the line with a chance to take the lead, but Bryan Michaels missed both free throws.

Thompson was then fouled and the Nighthawks sealed the victory from the line.

Sam Roth had a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, while Obi Megwa finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Jones, who was playing after missing two games because of injury, finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Thompson had nine points.

Jarrett Gray's 24 points led Concordia (4-13, 0-9), while Christopher Edward finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Nighthawks play at Western Oregon at 8 p.m. MDT on Saturday. The Wolves are in second place in the league standings, while the Nighthawks are in a three-way tie for fourth.
