MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon University upset the Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team 67-61 on Thursday night as both teams opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play in Monmouth.
The Wolves (6-9, 1-0 GNAC), who snapped the Crusaders nine-game winning streak, out-scored NNU 26 to 9 at the free throw line, including a 16-of-20 free throw performance by WOU's Katie Torland. Torland scored a game-high 24 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Lindsey Shearer also reached double-figures for the Wolves with 11.
NNU edged WOU on the glass 33-32 and shot 45.5-percent (25-55) from the floor, but could not overcome the margin at the charity stripe as Torland converted more free throws than the Crusaders attempted.
The Wolves shot 38-percent (19-50) from the floor and 33-percent (3-9) from the three-point line.
The Crusaders will travel to Saint Martin's University on Saturday for a GNAC counter that tips-off at 2:00 p.m. local time.
