NAMPA, Idaho -
Brian Barkdoll pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and scored 14 points to lead the Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team to an 89-68 victory over the University of Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday night at the Johnson Sports Center.
"Barkdoll is really playing hard right now," commented NNU head coach Tim Hills on his 6-10 sophomore that posted his third-straight double-double performance against the Nanooks. "He had a great week last week and continues to give us everything he's got. He's playing like an all-conference player."
While Barkdoll led the Crusaders 40-24 effort over UAF on the glass,
Kendall Gielow led the team in scoring with 16.
Joel Ryman hit on five of 10 three pointers to score 15 and
Adam Shildmyer added 14, all in the first half, to join Barkdoll in double-figures.
"Shildmyer drew the defensive assignment on Jenkins, which is tough, but his stat line tonight of 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and no turnovers in 33 minutes was just what we needed," Hills added.
Emmanuel Jenkins led the Nanooks (6-16, 3-10 GNAC) with 16, but had to work for each basket as Jenkins finished six of 16 from the floor and two of eight from the three point line. Aaron Jones added 15 and both Nashorn Maynard and Colin Matteson finished with 10 each. UAF played without second-leading scorer Jon Moe.
Leading 28-26 with 5:02 left in the first half, Gielow hit a pair of free throws, Shildmyer nailed a three, and
Louie Beech followed with another two freebies and the Crusaders opened up a 34-26 margin with 3:12 left in the half. NNU would continue the pressure and finish the final three minutes on a 9-4 run to take a 43-30 lead into the break.
Coming out of the locker room NNU hit their first four shots of the half to outscore UAF 9-2, increasing the lead to 20 at 52-32 with 17:08 remaining. The Crusaders never looked back, leading by as many as 27, the first time at 64-37 after a Beech triple found the net with 13:21 left to play. Beech and Anthony Golden both finished with eight points and a team-high six assists each.
The Crusaders (12-12, 4-10 GNAC) shot 48.4-percent (30-62) from the floor and were 13 of 29 (44.8-percent) from the three point line while UAF shot 50-percent (28-56) from the floor, but were only three of 18 from the arc.
NNU will next host the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
