NAMPA, Idaho - Breaking both the NNU and Great Northwest Athletic Conference records for most points scored in a single game, the Northwest Nazarene men's basketball team opened the season with a convincing 136-97 victory over Multnomah University on Saturday afternoon at the Johnson Sports Center.
With Multnomah University (1-2) playing an up-tempo, three-point shot dominate offense, the Crusaders (1-0) out-gunned the visitors at their own game, shooting 52.1-percent (55-103) from the floor and 39.4-percent (13-33) from the three-point line in the record setting win.
"Maybe not the prettiest of wins, but we will take the 'W' to start the season," commented NNU head coach Tim Hills. "We shot the ball well and did a good job of being disciplined, taking good shots despite the chaotic pace at times. It's an unorthodox system to play against, so we gave a solid effort tonight."
Matt Mgebroff led the NNU effort on the glass with a game-high 10 rebounds as the Crusaders out-rebounded the Lions 74-27.
Records set in the game included most points scored by NNU in a single game (136), most combined three-point field goals (34), most three-point field goals allowed (21), most three-point field goal attempts allowed (57) and most combined total points (233).
Tyler Yates led the Lions with a game-high 24 points, making eight-of-16 three-point attempts. Jacob Fisher added 21 and Nick Kamlade scored 20. MU shot 42.0-percent (34-81) from the field and 36.8-percent from the arc, casting 57 three-pointers and making 21.
Ryman and
Tyler Roberts each dished-out six assists as the Crusaders posted 34 assists to just 15 turnovers in the fast-paced contest.
NNU will travel to Sonoma, Calif. next weekend to play in the Ron Logsdon Classic, hosted by Sonoma State University. The Crusaders will face the host Seawolves on Friday at 7:30 p.m. PST and then play San Fransicso State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PST.
