Nighthawks Sweep Wildcats to Start Weekend Series Strong

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Northwest Nazarene softball team opened Great Northwest Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Central Washington on Friday the 6th, defeating the Wildcats 8–0 in five innings in game one before rallying for an 11–4 victory in game two.

Game One – NNU 8, CWU 0 (5 innings)

The Nighthawks wasted no time setting the tone in the opener, erupting for five runs in the top of the first inning. After Ava Clark and Jami Obringer drew back-to-back walks, Hailey Harris delivered a double to left center that scored both runners to give NNU an early 2–0 lead.

Northwest Nazarene continued the rally as Emma Bumatay singled before Keana Bell added an RBI single to center field to bring Harris home. Annie Swanson later lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score another run, and a passed ball allowed Bell to cross the plate, extending the lead to 5–0.


The Nighthawks added three more runs in the third inning. Bell singled to start the frame and later scored on an RBI groundout by Paisley Noyer. Later in the inning, Obringer reached on an error that allowed two additional NNU runners to score, pushing the advantage to 8–0.


In the circle, Miah Lusk delivered a dominant outing. The right-hander threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit over five innings while striking out five and walking one on 80 pitches to improve to 7–3 on the season. Lusk and the Nighthawks defene retired the final nine Wildcats in order to secure the run-rule victory.

Game Two – NNU 11, CWU 4

The second game began as a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to break through in the first three innings.

Northwest Nazarene finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth. Clark tripled to right center to start the inning before Obringer followed with an RBI triple of her own. Harris then drove in another run with a single, and Noyer later added an RBI single to cap a three-run frame and give the Nighthawks a 3–0 lead.


NNU extended the lead in the fifth inning as Harris delivered an RBI single and Bumatay followed with another RBI knock to make it 5–0.


Central Washington responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on three hits, including a two-RBI double from Baker that cut the Nighthawk lead to 5–4.


Northwest Nazarene answered in a big way in the seventh inning. The Nighthawks loaded the bases with walks before Lola Crosby and Swanson each drew RBI walks to push the lead to 7–4. Moments later, Clark delivered the knockout blow, blasting a grand slam to right center to extend the lead to 11–4.


The Nighthawks closed the door in the bottom half of the inning to secure the sweep.


Clark led the offense with a four-RBI home run in the seventh, while Harris and Bumatay each added multiple RBIs. The Nighthawks combined for 15 hits in the game.
