LEWISTON, Idaho — Hazel Kunkel made history Saturday at the Lewis-Clark State Invitational, setting a new Northwest Nazarene women's cross country 5K school record with a fifth-place finish in 17:23.
Kunkel broke the previous record of 17:31, set by Natalie Evans in 2013 on the same course. Her performance helped lead the NNU women to a third-place team finish with 94 points, just three points behind Southern Idaho. Gonzaga won the team title with 16 points.
Cameron Moore finished ninth overall in 17:42, while McKenna Lechner and Zoey Stauffer both crossed in 18:20 to finish 26th and 27th. Ella Bartlett rounded out the Nighthawks' scoring five in 18:30, followed by June Nemrow in 18:42 and Madison Ingram in 18:44.
The women also made a big impact on the program's all-time 5K list, with eight new additions to the top 20 following Saturday's race.
On the men's side, NNU also finished third as a team with 109 points. Luke Stockett led the Nighthawks with a second-place finish in 24:11. Emmitt Warren Viii placed 10th in 24:47, followed by Ian Stockett in 20th at 25:07. Christian Gump finished in 25:51, and Izayah Palmer crossed in 26:00 to round out the scoring five.
The Nighthawks will return to competition Nov. 7 for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championships in Monmouth, Oregon.
