Nighthawks Wrap Up Home Tournament Against Westminster and Concordia

NAMPA, Idaho – The NNU Nighthawks closed out their run in the Hampton Inn Nighthawks Classic with two competitive matchups on Friday, September 13. Despite strong efforts, the Nighthawks fell to both Westminster and Concordia University Irvine (CUI), pushing the latter to four sets in a hard-fought contest.

Match 1: Westminster 3, NNU 0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-17)

The Nighthawks opened the day against a high-powered Westminster Griffins squad. The first set was tightly contested, with NNU staying within four points throughout. Ultimately, the Griffins edged out the Nighthawks in extra points, 26-24.

Set two followed a similar script, with Westminster maintaining a slight edge and closing out 25-21. Despite jumping out to an early lead in set three, NNU couldn't hold off the Griffins' offense and dropped the final set 25-17.

Westminster posted 46 kills and 55 digs, while the Nighthawks recorded 37 kills and 53 digs.

Lily Kinloch led the Nighthawks offensively with 12 kills.

On defense, Kayci Spray anchored the back row with 13 digs, followed by Abby Black with 10.

Match 2: CUI 3, NNU 1 (25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-12)

In their second match of the evening, the Nighthawks faced a tough opponent in Concordia University Irvine. The Eagles came out firing in set one, building an early 8-point lead. A service run from Hailey Cheney helped NNU close the gap to 10-7, and later 17-15, but CUI held on for a 25-12 win.

Set two was another tight battle, with the Nighthawks pushing back but unable to overcome CUI's offensive firepower. The Eagles outpaced NNU in kills 17-11 to take the set 25-20.

Refusing to go down quietly, the Nighthawks responded in set three with resilience and energy. A late push saw them take the lead and maintain momentum throughout. A huge block by Abby Black and Madi Smith sealed the set for NNU, 25-20, sending the match into a fourth game.

In set four, CUI regrouped and reasserted control early, building a lead the Nighthawks couldn't overcome. The Eagles closed out the match with a 25-12 win to secure the 3-1 victory.

Abby Black recorded 9 kills for the Nighthawks followed by Madi Smith and Hailey Cheney who both had 7.

Morgan Wilding had 27 assists fueling the Nighthawks offense.

The Nighthawks will stay at home as we head into conference play. They will host Western Washington on Thursday September, 18th. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm in the Johnson Sports Center.
