Nighthawks Fall in Three to Westmont Warriors

NAMPA, Idaho – The Nighthawks competed in their second game of the Hampton Inn Nighthawks Classic on September 12th in the Johnson Sports Center. After coming off of a huge opening win the night before the NNU team looked to repeat as they faced off against the Westmont Warriors. However, the Warriors proved tough competition and put away the game 3-0 with set scores of 25-15, 25-20, and 25-13.

In the first set, the Nighthawks took an early lead by capitalizing on offensive aggressiveness and Warrior errors. Westmont battled back and tied the score at 5-5 with a kill from Alexis Dennick. The set remained close as both teams traded points into the teens. Then, an offensive spark ignited on the Warriors' side, allowing them to build a commanding 19-12 lead. A massive block by Jenna Holm and Maddy Hellem gave the Nighthawks a boost, followed by a kill from Hellem that brought NNU within five points. However, the Warriors regained control and closed out the set, 25-15.

Riding the momentum from the first set, the Warriors jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the second. NNU head coach Doug English called a timeout in hopes of regrouping his squad, but Westmont continued to apply pressure, extending their lead to 12-6. Back-to-back kills from Lily Kinloch and Hailey Cheney sparked the Nighthawks' first significant run of the night, scoring four straight points to pull within two. Despite NNU's efforts, the Warriors maintained their advantage and secured the second set, 25-20.

In the final set of the match, the Nighthawks refused to go down without a fight, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead. However, the scrappy Westmont squad responded, taking over the lead at 9-8 thanks to a service ace from Maddie Finnegan. Finnegan went on to serve nine consecutive points, swinging the momentum firmly in the Warriors' favor. In an effort to disrupt the run, Coach Doug English brought in substitutes Madison Cheney, Addison Lynn, Kirby Kaycee, and Lexi Douthit. While the Nighthawks managed to add a few more points, the Warriors maintained control and closed out the set—and the match—with a 25-13 win.

Maddy Hellem led her team offensively recording 11 kills closely followed by Abby Black who had 10. Black also led her team defensively with 14 digs followed by Kayci Spray who had 10.

The Nighthawks return to the court on Saturday, September 13, to close out the Hampton Inns Nighthawks Classic with two games. They will compete against Westminster at 9 am and against Concordia at 7 pm in the Johnson Sports Center.
