Nighthawks Rally Late for Victory Over Westminster

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene men's soccer broke through for three late goals to take a thrilling 4-2 victory over Westminster on Thursday night.

The Nighthawks improve to 2-0-1 on the season.

NNU looked strong early, taking the lead in the 20th minute when Kwame Kwakye cleaned up Derek Johnson's deflected shot in the box to tally his first goal of the season. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.

Things really got wild in the second half, as the Griffins took the lead with a pair of goals to go up 2-1 in the 69th. The Nighthawks wasted no time in tying the game back up, though, with Rylan McPherson finding the back of the net for his third goal of the year in the 71st.

Then, less than a minute later, Baraka Dayi put NNU back on top with an incredible strike from outside the box that found the upper left corner of the net.

Derek Remen added an insurance goal in the 87th as the Nighthawks took the 4-2 victory. Both freshmen, Dayi and Remen's goals were each the first of their collegiate careers.

Shots were even at 15 apiece, with Westminster holding a slight edge in shots on target at 10-9. Gerardo Fonte came up big in goal, though, turning away seven of the Griffins' attempts.

NNU will take a day off now before hosting Colorado Mesa on Saturday, with start time set for 3:00 p.m. in Nampa.
