NNU Athletics Launches Campaign to Honor Hall of Famer Tim Gilbert with New Track & Field Hurdles

| By:
Nampa, Idaho - Northwest Nazarene University has announced the launch of a fundraising campaign to purchase a new set of hurdles for the NNU track & field program, honoring the legacy of NNU Athletics Hall of Famer Tim Gilbert.

Gilbert, a standout hurdler and versatile athlete, left an indelible mark on NNU and the track & field program. Despite training with limited equipment during his college career, Gilbert became one of the more decorated athletes in school history, setting a 440 intermediate hurdles record of 52.05 in 1977 that still stands nearly 50 years later. He went on to place second at the NAIA Outdoor Nationals, giving NNU its highest-ever finish at that time.

"Tim was more than an extraordinary athlete," said Robin Gilbert, Tim's wife. "He was a humble, kind, and passionate man who loved investing in others. This project is a way to honor his memory and support the next generation of student-athletes."

The current set of hurdles used by the NNU program was purchased around 1999. A complete replacement set requires 85 hurdles at a cost of approximately $50,000. Robin Gilbert has generously pledged the first $15,000 to the project and is inviting alumni, friends, and supporters to join her in raising the remaining $35,000. The goal is to have the hurdles in place by spring 2027, when NNU will host the GNAC Outdoor Championships.

"This is about more than just equipment," said Paul Rush, NNU Director of Athletics. "It's a tribute to Tim Gilbert's enduring impact on our community and a gift to future athletes who will train and compete at the highest level."

Tim Gilbert was inducted into the NNU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021, a moment he described as the best day of his life. His legacy as an encourager, teammate, and mentor continues to inspire those who knew him and those who follow in his footsteps.

NNU invites the community to celebrate Tim's life and legacy by contributing to the hurdles campaign.
