AZUSA, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball held on for a 4-3 win over Azusa Pacific in a shortened game one of Thursday's scheduled doubleheader before game two was canceled due to rain.
The Nighthawks improve to 5-4 on the year following their season-opening trip to California.
Azusa Pacific got on the board early in the opener with one run in the bottom of the first.
After being held scoreless in the top of the first, NNU responded with two runs in the top of the second.
Jami Obringer tied the game with an RBI double and
Kellcie Adams gave the Nighthawks the lead with an RBI single.
The score remained 2-1 until the fifth when
Charlotte Forniss added to NNU's lead with a two-run single.
The Cougars came back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame, but the Nighthawks were able to clamp down and strand the tying run on second base.
NNU came out to bat in the top of the sixth and had a runner on third with two outs before two rain delays caused the umpires to call the game. Since it had gone enough innings, it counts and goes down as a win for the Nighthawks.
Adams and
Emma Bumatay each had two hits for NNU.
Miah Lusk pitched all five innings, earning the win in the circle while tallying three strikeouts.
