Nighthawks Struggle In Tough Match Up Against Colorado Mesa Mavericks

NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene Women's basketball team opened the GNAC-RMAC Crossover Tournament on the 19th competing against the competitive Colorado Mesa team. In an intense battle the NNU team struggled to find their momentum and fell, 67-52.

The Nighthawks move to 4-4 overall on the season and sit at 0-1 in conference.

The Nighthawks came out strong against the fast paced CMU team. With an early three by Allie Hueckman the NNU's offense looked strong. The teams traded baskets in the paint with points put in by Claire Fischer and Trinidie Nichols for the Nighthawks. The CMU team stretched out a lead as they forced key turnovers from the Nighthawks. A second chance shot for the Mavericks Olivia Reed set the score at 18-10 in favor of the CMU team as the quarter came to a close.

The second quarter saw the CMU team take control of the game as they outscored the Nighthawks 25-12. Despite the efforts put in by the Nighthawks full court press the Mavericks were able to put in 3-5 from the three point line and 10-17 from the field goal position. This combined with them controlling tempo out rebounding the NNU team 12-4 the teams went into half time with the Nighthawks trailing, 43-23.

As the third quarter got underway the NNU team looked to chip away at the Mavericks growing lead. Rylie Edlefsen looked to start this change, sinking an early three for the Nighthawks. Hadley Craig also put in a driving lay up hoping to ignite a spark for the NNU team. However, for every Nighthawk basket the Mavericks were able to respond holding on to their lead. Nichols knocked down one more three for the Nighthawks as the clock ran down. The teams went into the final quarter of the game with CMU ahead, 59-36.

The Nighthawks found a final spark in the fourth quarter, outscoring CMU 16-8. Despite the late push, the Mavericks refused to concede and secured the 67–52 victory.
