LACEY, Wash. – Northwest Nazarene men's soccer broke through for three goals in the final 25 minutes to defeat Saint Martin's 3-0 on the road on Thursday.
The Nighthawks improve move up into a tie with Simon Fraser for second in the GNAC standings with seven points, with NNU now at 2-1-1 in conference play and 5-3-3 overall.
The first half only saw one shot on goal between the two teams, coming from SMU's Cole Sullivan just before halftime.
Gerardo Fonte was able to collect the save and keep the game scoreless at the break.
The Nighthawks broke the deadlock in the 66
th minute, when
Derek Remen found
Baraka Dayi streaking down the right side and Dayi snuck a shot past the SMU keeper to make it 1-0.
Just two minutes later,
Derek Johnson took a shot that was saved by the Saints' keeper, but
Caleb Putney was able to collect the ball and insert it just inside the far post to give NNU a 2-0 lead.
The final tally came in the 84
th minute, when Dayi capitalized on an SMU defensive miscue and found
David Campos in the box. Campos chipped the ball over the keeper and into the net to make it 3-0.
NNU finished with an 11-4 advantage in shots (4-2 on goal). Fonte had two saves in the 90 minutes of action.
The Nighthawks now head to Western Oregon this Saturday, facing the Wolves in Monmouth at 10:00 a.m. Pacific.
