Nighthawks Fall to Alaska Anchorage in Hard-Fought Battle

NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene women's basketball hosted their first home game of the season on January 2nd, facing off against the University of Alaska Anchorage. The game was an exciting, tight matchup but ended with the Nighthawks falling to the Seawolves, 74-59.

This loss brings NNU's record to 0-2 in conference play and 6-5 overall.

From the start, the Nighthawks faced challenges keeping pace with the Seawolves, who opened with a 16-5 lead. However, the Nighthawks responded with strong defensive efforts to get back into the game. Late in the first quarter, key three-pointers by Chloe Deharo and Beaux Bruegman, followed by a layup from Kendall Clark off a steal by Deharo, tied the game at 20-20 to close the quarter.

Fueled by their momentum, the Nighthawks battled hard in the second quarter, taking the lead twice. Despite their efforts, including 13-for-31 shooting, 18 rebounds, and 11 steals in the first half, the Seawolves regained control, holding a 41-36 advantage at halftime.

The intensity carried into the second half, with NNU narrowing the deficit to six points midway through the third quarter. The team relied on fundamentals, capitalizing on free throws and rebounds to stay competitive. A late steal and fastbreak layup by Loy Waid brought the Nighthawks within six as the quarter ended. Unfortunately, in the final quarter, the Seawolves reasserted control, and despite a last-minute three-pointer by Madeline Gebers, the game concluded with UAA securing the win.

Kendall Clark led the Nighthawks with 10 points, followed by Chloe Deharo with 9. Loy Waid and Madeline Gebers each contributed four steals.

The Nighthawks will return to the Johnson Sports Center on January 4th for a midday game against Alaska Fairbanks. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. Mountain Time.
