Nighthawks Sting #6 Yellowjackets in Thriller

NAMPA, Idaho – The Nighthawks faced a tough match up on Thursday the 16th as they went up against the number 6 team in the nation, Montana State Billings. After a back and forth competition the Nighthawks were able to pull through with the upset victory, 75-69.

With the win, the Nighthawks improved to 4-2 in GNAC play and 10-5 overall.

The MSB team came out with a offensive intensity that caused grievance for the Nighthawks squad early. They were able to build up an 18-4 lead until the NNU team began to battle back with less than 5 minutes remaining in the quarter.
The Nighthawks buckled down and were able to overcome the press put on by the Yellowjackets. With this their offense was able to flow and the NNU team cut the MSB lead to 6 as the quarter came to a close.

The second quarter is when the Nighthawks really started to turn the game around. They were able to edge out the Yellowjackets not only with baskets, recording 15 to the MSB's 14, but they also almost doubled their rebounds. However, with 7 turnovers from the Nighthawks, the Yellowjackets were able to capitalize enough to keep their lead and went into the half up 38-33.

Coming out in the third quarter the Nighthawks built up an intensity from the court and the crowd as they took their first lead of the game. The energy in the gym was palpable as the NNU team recorded 22 points, including 4 for 7 from the three point line.

Beaux Bruegman recorded one of these three pointers with 1:13 remaining. This basket put the Nighthawks in the lead by 3. With a buzzer beater layup put in by Kendall Clark the Nighthawks finished the third up, 55-50.

As the final leg of the game got underway the NNU team fought to hold on to their lead. With less than 2 minutes remaining Dyauni Boyce from Billings made a three pointer getting them within 2. However, the MSB team found themselves in foul trouble which the Nighthawks were able to capitalize on stretching the lead back out to 71-66.

The defensively strong MSB team has averaged 54 points allowed per game this season, but the Nighthawks exceeded that by a wide margin and became the highest-scoring opponent the Yellow Jackets have faced this year.

Kendall Clark led her team with 23 points, which puts her at over 200 points scored so far this season. The point spread was evenly split following Clark as Chloe Deharo, Loy Waid, Kate Clark, and Beaux Bruegman each recorded 8.

The Nighthawks will be back in their home gym on Jan. 18th as they go head to head against Seattle Pacific University. Tip off is set for 5:15 pm Mountain Time in the Johnson Sports Center.
