Nighthawks Soar Past Falcons in Close Victory

NAMPA, Idaho – The Nighthawks went head to head with the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Saturday in the Johnson Sports Center. Despite a rough first quarter and being down a crucial player, Kendall Clark, the NNU team was able to rally together and take an 88-84 victory.

With the win, the Nighthawks improved to 5-2 in GNAC play and 11-5 overall.

The SPU team shot nearly 80% in the first quarter, jumping out to a 35-21 lead after the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter was a different story for the NNU squad, who held the SPU team to only 6 points compared to their 17. As the Nighthawks upped their performance the Falcons also found themselves in foul trouble. With the opportunity at the free throw line the NNU team shot an impressive 8 for 8. As the quarter drew to an end Beaux Bruegman made a buzzer beater 3 pointer to send the Nighthawks into the locker room only down 41-38.

The Nighthawks took the lead in the third quarter with a Chloe Deharo free throw. In their highest scoring quarter the NNU team shot 9 for 17 from the field and were able to continue to capitalize off of rebounds with 21 second chance points. The teams went into the final quarter of the game with a score of 66-58 in favor of the Nighthawks.

In an exciting final quarter, SPU was able to get themselves back into the game. With a minute and a half left in the quarter Grace Turley drained a three pointer to tie the score at 84-84. As the clock ticked down the Nighthawks took back their lead at the free throw line, though, as Madeline Gebers went 4 for 4 in the final seconds. The game finished with NNU on top 88-84.

Beaux Bruegman had a stand-out night with a career high 20 points. Loy Waid was right behind her recording 18 points for the game.

The Nighthawks will be on the road in the coming week as they travel to compete against Western Oregon. The game is set for January 23rd at 5:15 pm Pacific Time in the New PE Building in Monmouth.
