CARSON, Calif. – Northwest Nazarene softball defeated Dominican 3-2 in extra innings and Cal State Dominguez Hills 2-1 with a walk-off to finish the Concordia Kickoff Classic undefeated.
The Nighthawks move to 3-0 on the young season.
Game 1 vs. Dominican
Nighthawks scored first in game two, of their young season. This time it was a two-run home run in the second inning by
Emma Bumatay. Bumatay's home run brought
Charlotte Forniss in to score after she reached base on a single to right field just one batter earlier.
Forniss started in the circle for NNU and did not allow a hit until the third inning.
Gina Skinner entered the game with bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning to pitch. After getting one out, two runs came around to score on an error, tying the game at 2-2.
The 2-2 score held and sent the game into an extra inning. With two outs in the top of the eighth inning,
Sidney Booth hit a double into left field.
Olivia Bailey pinch ran for Booth and scored the go-ahead run when
Abigail Gagnon reached base safely on an error.
Booth threw the final 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out five batters to earn her second win of the year. She also led the team at the plate with three hits in four at bats.
Game 2 vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills
For the third straight game, the Nighthawks scored first, and that first score came from a home run. The big swinger in this case was
Clarissa Moreno, who hit her home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning.
Cal State Dominguez Hills answered back with a sac fly in the top of the fourth inning to score an unearned run and tie the game at 1-1.
Sidney Booth called game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk-off RBI single that scored Moreno, giving NNU the 2-1 win.
Booth pitched all seven innings for NNU without allowing an earned run and striking out four hitters to earn her third win of the season.
Tournament Accolades
Both
Sidney Booth and
Clarissa Moreno were named to the All-Tournament team. As a pitcher, Booth finished the tournament with three wins and a 0.86 ERA. She struck out 14 batters and had a batting average against of just .138. As a hitter she went 5-10 with a double and an RBI. Moreno went 4-12 with a home run and played clean defense at shortstop for the Nighthawks.
