Nighthawks Lose First Match of SFU Thanksgiving Tournament

BURNABY, B.C. – The Nighthawks made the long trip to British Columbia this week to compete in the SFU Thanksgiving Tournament. Their first game of the contest was against Point Loma, and despite a run in the fourth quarter, the Nighthawks fell to the Sea Lions 75-65.

As the game got underway the Sea Lions came out on fire offensively. Shooting 7 for 14 from the field goal position and 3 for 5 from the three point line they were able to get an early edge. The NNU team attempted to respond but could not find their range, only shooting 5 for 13 in the first. As the quarter ended PLNU was up 19-12.

In the second quarter the Point Loma squad demonstrated a commitment to build their lead. With another impressive showing the Sea Lions recorded 21 points and 11 rebounds. NNU was unable to answer and went into the half down by 11.

It was in the second half of the game that the Nighthawks looked to turn the momentum around. They matched up with the Sea Lions from the three point line and went 7 for 15 from the field goal position. However the Point Loma team was able to hold their edge and shoot 8 for 15. This along with a strong defensive showing kept them with a 15 point lead.

The final quarter of the game was when the NNU team really made a run at taking the lead, outscoring the opposing team 18 to 13. Despite the great effort put in, the deficit was too large and the Nighthawks fell, losing to Point Loma by 10.

Kendall Clark led the Nighthawks squad with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Danika Starr also contributed 16 points overall and 6 rebounds.

The Nighthawks will have their second game of the tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. pacific time against Concordia.
