Nighthawks Stay Hot with Two Wins at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. - Northwest Nazarene softball kept their hot streak going with a pair of road victories over Western Oregon on Friday, taking game one 10-0 in five innings before a 5-1 game two win.

NNU improves to 31-15 overall and 19-3 in GNAC play with just two games remaining in the regular season tomorrow.

Earlier in the week, a Saint Martin's loss guaranteed the Nighthawks the 2023 GNAC regular season title for the third-straight season as well as the top seed in the conference tournament, which will take place from May 4-6 on the campus of Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C.

Game 1

The first game started as a pitchers' duel for the first three innings, as NNU starter Sidney Booth and WOU starter Maddie Mayer combined to allow just four baserunners over the three scoreless frames.

The Nighthawks finally broke through in the fourth, however, tallying four runs on three hits. Madison Felter drove in the first run with a sac fly, followed by Olivia Bailey coming in to score on a wild pitch. Kellcie Adams followed that with a two-RBI single to center, putting NNU on top 4-0.

NNU kept that momentum going into the fifth as they brought across six more runs to take full control of the game. Booth helped her cause with a three-RBI double and then came in to score on an RBI single from Felter. The ninth run came from Abigail Gagnon scoring on an error followed by Felter scoring on a wild pitch to make it 10-0.

Booth came back out for the bottom of the fifth and shut the Wolves down again to earn the run-rule victory. She allowed just two hits and no walks and struck out nine in the shutout, improving to 15-8 on the season.

Booth was also 2-3 with three RBIs at the plate, while Felter and Adams each added two RBIs. Felter and Tori Hensley both chipped in two hits as well for the Nighthawks.

Game 2

The Nighthawks got on the board first in the second inning, tallying twice without a hit. Booth, Felter, and Charlotte Forniss all walked to load the bases with two outs, followed by a hit-by-pitch of Jami Obringer and another walk to Clarissa Moreno to bring home the runs.

NNU added two more in the fourth on one swing, as Mari Kamemoto drove home Gagnon and Booth to make it 4-0. The Nighthawks would score once more in the fifth on an error.

Western Oregon got one back with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all they would get off NNU starter Hensley. She went the distance in the circle for the complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out five.

NNU had just four hits in the win, but benefited from eight walks and four hit-by-pitches that yielded plenty of baserunners.

Next Up

NNU has two more games against the Wolves on Saturday to wrap up the regular season before heading to Canada next week for the GNAC Championships.
